Research Notes

On 11 Jun 2001, Lucille Gustafson wrote in an email to Carol Stieger:

"Matthew Gustafson born in 1865 is our grandfather. Ida evidently is the next child born in 1869. I had come to the conclusing from the census I found this family in that she was born in May 1869 but that is as close and I was able to come. I have identified two younger boys--Emil Gustafson born in 1884 and Edward Gustafson born in 1886. The three living children we found belong to Emil--one from the first marriage and two brothers from the second marriage. When I started this project all I had to go from is a note my husband's father left stating what he knew about the family which wasn't much!! There is still a couple of brothers I have not been able to account for--John or Mark and Charles. There was a note that one was stabbed in Bingham. I have not been able to verify this in court records or the newspapers. Can't find either one on census."[7]

On 20 Jun 2001, Lucille Gustafson wrote in an email to Carol Stieger:

"Ida Gustafson is a sister to my husbands grandfather--Matthew Gustafson, born 27 April 1865. Ida and Matt ran the Finnish Boarding House in Eureka for a few years. We have identified two brothers (or half brothers we are thinking). They are Edward born 31 July 1886 and Emil born 17 June 1884. Emil still has children living (between 75 and 86 years of age)--a daughter from the first marriage and two sons from the second marriage. Edward still has a daughter-in-law alive. All very delightful people. We met them for the first time a few weeks ago. We all tell the same story-nobody knows the name of the parents. One of them have a picture of what is suspected to be the father. We are getting closer to having the "little place" in Finland they were born. Your query gave us some new clues. It is exciting to know someone else is also looking."[8]
