The Oxenstierna of Croneborg had a magnificent marble epitaph with a Latin inscription erected over him. 'He is the great statesman Axel Oxenstierna, the friend and adviser of the great King Gustaf II Adolf and the foremost ruler of Sweden's affairs, especially in Germany, after the king's death and until Queen Christina's accession to the government. Gained during his studies in Germany perfect proficiency in speaking and writing Latin and German, and studied theology with a fondness, for which science he later throughout his life maintained a special fondness. Returned to Sweden in 1603 at King Carl IX's general summons for Swedish nobles residing abroad. Became the ninth councilor in the right descending line of his family. Was 1611 on 30 Oct. was present in Nyköping at the said king's deathbed. At his appointment in 1612 as chancellor, advised King Gustaf II Adolf against harshness towards the nobility. Received 1614-02-05 at the Riksdag in Örebro from the king as manslän seven bol in Kimito parish to barony, to which 1619-02-01 Nynäs gård was added for an improvement and 1627-11-27 another eleven bol in Kimito parish to barony for his eldest son, on whose death in the following year this part of the parish also fell to his father's barony2. At the said king's coronation, he wore the royal apple and created four theology doctors on the same occasion. Was sent home in 1626 from Prussia to take care of Queen Dowager Christina's funeral. Was offered princely dignity by the king in 1627, but refused to accept it. In 1634, part of the German Reichsstands appointed him Elector of Mainz, which he, however, recanted on 5/4, just as he subsequently declined the duke title offered by Queen Christina. Came 1646-07-00 after 10 years' absence and after he had put things in Germany on a favorable footing, returned to the kingdom and was received by the estates with great respect. Also wore the national apple at Queen Christina's coronation in 1650. Through his performances with the queen, the enforcement of the three unsaved estates' claim for a reduction of the crown estates, thereby bringing him into the disfavor of the clergy. Loudly disapproved of the queen's intention to appoint Duke Carl Gustaf as his successor, who notwithstanding, when he became king, expressed great confidence in him, calling him his father, his best friend and his foremost adviser. Feigned impropriety and was not present at Queen Christina's abdication. Have given a library taken in Mainz to Västerås high school. His works are listed in the von Stiernmans Biblioth.
