Note

Note: There is a discrepency between Phillip's headstone which lists 1830 as his birth year, and his military discharge which lists 1834 as his birth year. His pension records, which we received April 12, 1996 indicate that 1830 is his birth year. In October 1999, we were able to find an entry for Phillip on the 1880 Beaver Township, Guthrie County, Iowa Census which corroberates the 1830 date as being the correct date.
Phillip died at the home of one of his daughters, Mary (Mame) Huxley, who had moved to Buffalo, New York. It is not known when he went to Buffalo following his wife's death.
In April of 1999 we received a partial copy of a ship's passenger list for "The Admiral" that left Havre, France and landed in New York on 24 October 1860 shows that seems to indicate that he came to this country alone at the age of 29, with an occupation of Farmer from Bravaria in Germany. The records are from "Germans to America" Lists of Passengers Arriving at U.S. Ports, Volume 13 August 1859 to December 1860.
We have found an entry in the Iowa 1880 Census that indicated that he was born in Prussia, and that his parents were also from Prussia. We have a photocopy of that listing.
Phillip served in the Union Army as a member of Company "D" 16th Regiment, Ohio Volunteers, to serve a nine month period. He was discharged on August 11, 1863 at Vicksburg, Mississippi. We have a partial copy of his discharge document. His name was misspelled. It was spelled "Goodile". His military records have been obtained from the National Archives. These give his name as "Goodhile and "Goodile". These records indicate that he was drafted, not a volunteer. He entered the service from either Holmes or Wayne Counties, Ohio. We have also obtailed his pension Records from the National Archives. These indicate that Phillip had contracted several illnesses during his service, and because of these, he lived with a Mr.N. Schlarb for approximately eight months while recuperating. They also indicate that he had quite a struggle proving that he did serve because of the misspelled names.
It may be that when Phillip was discharged, he may have gone back to Ohio for a time, where he met his future wife, Harriet Lee. They then went west to Iowa settling in Guthrie County.
Listed as Farmer in 1880 census also on the immigration entry and discharge papers
