Preceded by Alexander Guthrie, 6th Baron of Guthrie |
William Guthrie 7th Baron of Guthrie 20 June 1616 - ? |
Succeeded by David Guthrie, 8th Baron of Guthrie |
It is assumed that William Guthrie, 7th Baron of Guthrie, as a second son, was born at least a couple years after 1568, when his parents were married.
William Guthrie was the younger son of Alexander Guthrie 5th Baron of Guthrie and Agnes, daughter of Sir Alexander Falconer of Halkerton, Mearns, (great-grandfather of Alexander, first Lord Halkerton), by Elizabeth, his wife, daughter of Sir Archibald Douglas of Glenbervie. [1]
He was known as William Guthrie, laird of Memus, until 20 June 1616 when he was was retourned as heir to his elder brother Alexander, the 6th Baron, who had died without any male heir. [2]
William Guthrie, 7th Baron of Guthrie had no male issue. Normally the next heir would have been his uncle, William Guthrie, 1st of Gage (died 1622) or his son, Alexander Guthrie, 2nd of Gagie. However, there may have been a family feud and the Barony of Guthrie, along with Memys and Kincrief, was disponed to William's third cousin, David Guthrie, 7th of Kincaldrum, who became the 8th Baron of Guthrie.
