Biography

Alexander Guthrie is a member of Clan Guthrie.

Alexander Guthrie, 4th of Kincaldrum, may have been born about 1498. His father, Sir Alexander Guthrie is stated to have married married Margaret Lyon, daughter of John Lyon, 3rd Lord Glamis and Elizabeth Scrymgeour. [1] This would appear to have been Margaret Lyon's second marriage as an entry regarding Margaret Lyon in The Scots Peerage [2] states:

Margaret, married (contract 10 June 1495) to James Rynd, younger of Broxmouth. tocher 400 merks.*

If that entry is correct, and the date of the marriage contract does seem to be coherent with those of her elder sisters, then her children with Sir Alexander Guthrie, 2nd Baron of Guthrie must have been born after 1495.

Alexander Guthrie was the second son of Sir Alexander Guthrie 2nd Baron of Guthrie and Margaret Lyon. [1]

At the battle of Flodden Field on 9 September 1513, Alexander lost his father, Sir Alexander Guthrie, 2nd Baron of Guthrie, his elder brother, David Guthrie, younger of Guthrie, and three of his maternal uncles, David, William and George Lyon. [3]

After his father's death, the Barony of Guthrie was inherited by Alexander's nephew, son of his elder brother David, while Alexander himself succeeded his father to become 4th of Kincaldrum. [1]
