Biography

Obituary: Eureka Herald, (Eureka, KS) May 12, 2020-- John Alan Guthrie, 86, US Army veteran, died April 25, 2020. He was born near Neola, Kansas to John H. and Minnie (Black) Guthrie on February 15, 1934. His family included Norma (Gary), Richard, Robert (Janet), Kenneth (Judy), and Keith (Janet) plus nephews and nieces, including Charlene and Anne of Eureka. He graduated from Stafford High School in 1952 and Santa Monica City College.

John served his country in Korea as an artillery mechanic at 30th Ord. H.M. Co. He was a retired jig and fixture builder for Douglas Missile and Space Division in Santa Monica and at Cessna in Wichita. He also did contract work for H.L. YOH Co.

In this lifetime he donated over 10 gallons of blood. Since 1990, he had a cow/calf operation to occupy his time. He had a daily route of breakfast at Copper Kettle with brother and sister-in-law, Home Bank, Flint Hills Feed Store, Casey’s, G&W Deli, Ranch Aid, and Eastside. He enjoyed going to the Community Linc Suppers and the organizations of KLA and Greenwood County Livestock, Farm Bureau, Soil Conservation, and SEK Coop. John read the Wichita Eagle, Eureka Herald, National Geographic, Times, and history books checked out from the Eureka Library. He enjoyed visiting about the weather, cattle and certain projects with neighbors, friends, and his brother Keith.

John was well cared for at Greenwood County Hospital by a wonderful, caring staff. He will be missed by family and friends for his smile, laugh and quick wit. It was John’s wishes to be cremated (Wulf-Ast Mortuary) and buried at Kansas Veterans Cemetery at Winfield.

A memorial service is planned for June 5, at 2 p.m. Memorials contributions may be made to Greenwood County Hospital, 100 W. 16th St., Eureka, KS 67045.
