He had grey eyes and brown hair. He registered for the draft on September 12, 1918. At that time he was a farm labourer for his father. His nickname is "Slim", potentially from his draft record,
He married Rita Bentley in 1926; the wedding was witnessed by his mother Minnie and Rita's sister Alice.
John and Rita had five children: Louise, Fred, Jack, Robert and Vernan.
