This Francis Guy was the son of George Thomas Guy. He lived at Batemans Bay but moved to their home at Woy Woy where he died in 1947, he was only 66 but was a very sick man. The Guy Sawmilling Co had been formed back when our Francis had been alive, it was passed to Francis (Frank) jnr and his sons Francis Harrington Guy and George Thomas Guy kept the company going. It was known as "The Firm" and a real family dynasty. It then went to George Thomas Guy's son Francis but I think because of the times and his illness the company closed. The Guy Sawmilling Co was a huge concern at Darling Harbour, land given to Francis jnr by John Harris of Ultimo -Shane Park and Guy fill sections of the harbour to use for his sawmill and built a 50ft wharf into the harbour so his ships could pull in to deliver timber and goods. The trouble was that the steamers also tied at his wharf without his permission and he had problems getting his sailing ships in. Also the steamers tipped their fire waste into the water at the wharf and it was silting the harbour floor and making it shallower for Guy's ships. Big court case re Guy v the steam company,Guy lost. The company also moved to Blackwattle Bay when Sir Edward Knox 's CSR Company brought up all the land at Darling Harbour and there was no room for other businesses, so Francis Guy (Frank) moved back in the 1870's-80's.
The sawmills using the same name were also on the south coast so it was a pretty big concern. The two photos. First one at Batemans Bay Francis on his horse, second of Francis and his wife Rita Lee at their home in North St Batemans Bay next to the hospital. The house was sold and a Fish & Chip Shop opened in it and later burnt down because of the cooking oil. Francis was ready to leave the Bay by the time this photo was taken,he was pretty sick.
Have made contact with our Francis half sister's family. A Sally Brown from Canada wrote through our cousin Jo Murdock in Utah. Saly's husband is the same as us to Deborah Guy-Bamford. 4 x great grandmother (Deborah). Deborah had a daughter Mary who married William Brown and this is where Sally's husband comes from. Will write more about the family when next I write.
