Biography

1776 Project
Private Aaron Guyton served with 2nd Spartan Regiment, South Carolina Militia (Brandon's) during the American Revolution.

Aaron Guyton is a DAR Patriot Ancestor, A048667.

Aaron Guyton was born in Baltimore county, Maryland in 1761. He fought in the American Revolution as a Private in the South Carolina Militia [1].[2] A Transcription of his Pension file [3] shows that Aaron served under a number of commanders, including his brother, Captain Moses Guyton. He fought in several southern campaigns, notably the Battle of Cowpens in 1781.

The 1800 census shows Aaron living in South Carolina, where he lived in the Pendleton/Anderson area until his death in 1841.

His will, signed 14 Feb 1840, leaves bequests to:

daughters: Polly (Mary) Guyton Sherrill, Hannah (Guyton) Smith, Betsy (Guyton) Webb, Margaret (Guyton) Steele, and Sally (Guyton) Ducksworth
sons: Robert Guyton, Joseph Guyton, Aron W. Guyton, John W. Guyton, Guyton Guyton
wife Margaret Guyton

Notes

The 1820 Census shows that Aaron Guyton's household included nine enslaved people: two boys under age 14, three men, two girls under age fourteen, and two women.

By 1840 [4], the number of enslaved people owned by Aaron Guyton had increased to twenty two:

5 boys under ten years old
3 young men between 10-23 years old
2 men between 24-35 years old
7 girls under ten years old
3 young women between 10-23 years old
2 women between 24-35 years old

Aaron's will, written in 1840, gives names to some of these people:

"one negro" to each of his five daughters
Leah, a woman, & her child – to son, Joseph Guyton
Lawson, a boy – to son Aron W. Guyton
Adam, a boy - to son John W. Guyton. Adam (Unknown) Guyton
Orange, a boy, to son Guyton Guyton. Orange (Unknown) Guyton.
Bill, a man – to son Guyton Guyton
“if they cannot agree in a division then the negroes to be sold on a credit of Twelve months and the proceeds equally divided amongst them all…”

I agree that the middle name Steele is incorrect and am removing it.

I feel unsure about the middle name Steele. FAG uses this as a middle name, but it isn't clear why -- not in pension papers, not used in his will (just "Aaron Guyton"), no photo of tombstone. His daughter, Margaret, marries a Steele, but Aaron himself did not have a connection to the name until his daughter's marriage.
