Marie Louise Hélène Guérin, known as Marie, was born in Lisieux, Calvados, France on August 22, 1870. She was the younger of two daughters born to Isidore Guérin and Céline Fournet. Marie was baptised in the Cathedral of St. Pierre in Lisieux. He uncle, Louis Martin, was her Godfather. Marie was a lively child, though she was often sick. She attended the Benedictine school in Lisieux as a day pupil and excelled in her studies, in spite of frequent abscences due to illness. She was a good pianist and had a beautiful singing voice. Marie entered the Carmel of Lisieux on August 15, 1895 and was a novice under the direction of her cousin St. Thérèse. Like her cousin she suffered from tuberculosis. Marie died in the Carmel of Lisieux on April 14, 1905, it was the eve of Palm Sunday.
