Brigadier Sir Norman Wilmshurst Gwatkin (1899-1971) was the son of
Hugh Fortescue Wilmshurst Gwatkin & his wife Vera née Philpots.
He was educated at Clifton College, Clifton, Bristol, Gloucestershire, England, & at the Royal Military College, Sandhurst, Berkshire, England.
He was commissioned in 1918, in the service of the Coldstream Guards.
He was invested as a Member, Royal Victorian Order (M.V.O.) in 1937.
He gained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in 1940.
He was decorated with the award of the Companion, Distinguished Service Order (D.S.O.) in 1944.
He was invested as a Commander, Royal Victorian Order (C.V.O.) in 1946.
He held the office of Extra Equerry to King George VI between 1950 and 1952.
He held the office of Extra Equerry to Queen Elizabeth II between 1952 & 1971.
He held the office of Comptroller, Lord Chamberlain's Office between 1960 and 1964.
He was invested as a Knight Grand Cross, Royal Victorian Order (G.C.V.O.) in 1963.
He was Secretary & Registrar of the Order of Merit between 1963 and 1971.
He was invested as a Knight Commander, Order of St. Michael and St. George (K.C.M.G.) in 1964.
