William was born between 1821-1822 to Moses and Elizabeth Kincaid Gwin. He is listed with his parents on the 1850 Census in Highland County, Virginia.[1] By the time of the 1860 Census he is listed married to Rachel (maiden name uncertain) with one son: Franklin.[2] He is also listed with Rachel and his son on the 1870 Census[3] and on the 1880 Census he is listed with Rachel and his mother-in-law Jennie Gwin; which has led to speculation that Rachel's maiden name was Gwin (marriage record needed for verification).[4] William passed away on May 17, 1882 at the age of 61 in Highland County, Virginia.[5][6]
