Biography

Horatio was born about 1809 in Pennsylvania. He passed away in 1881near Hanford, California.

He married Lucinda Newcomb May 3, 1838 in Knox, Ohio. They had the following children: Mary Gwin, Gavin M Gwin, Thomas N Gwin, and Austin B Gwin.

Following the death of his wife, Lucinda Gwin, we find Horatio next in 1860 in Butte,California. In 1870, Horatio is living in Santa Barbara, California. In 1880, Horatio is living in Kaweah and Mineral King, Tulare, California.

The San Francisco Call Newspaper 5 Jan 1882 Page 4 published a death notice for Horatio Jones Gwin, age 72 years, 7 months and 23 days. Died near Hanford California on December 31, 1881.

Some secondary sources might work for him. Since you have the 1870 census, you might try to find the 1880 census and/or 1860. In 1850, he appears to have been living in Noblesville, Hamilton, Indiana with Lucinda and several children. There is also a voter registration in 1867 under the name Horatio Jones Gwinn possibly for him in Pine Creek, Butte, California, United States. There is an 1860 census for an H.G. Guinn in Kimshew, Butte, California, which is at least the same county as where the voter registration was. But the last two could be for someone else . Good luck.

By the way, the 1850 census includes his son Thomas, which you have the death record for showing both parents. Perhaps with both Thomas death record, coupled with the Census from 1850, it will help establish Horatio's birth year and place. It is unfortunate that Thomas' death record shows Scotland and England as birthplaces for his father and mother, respectively, though. But death records tend to have inaccuracies like that frequently.

Thank you for your help and comments. I do have census records for 1840, 50, 70, 80. (And with your help 1860. I had not found that one.) Horatio was living with his son in Calif., so I feel like that is the correct one. Have found a copy of the marriage record.

I found a newspaper single line obit of his death in CAlif, but they did not have a record when I requested from State records. Also found several tax records documents in CA. My Mayflower application helper told me that Mayflower did not want multiple copies of census records and other records and so I keep looking. Thank you again.

Perhaps King County, CA might have a record of his death. Good that you found the obit at least.

I have seen very thoroughly researched “notes” being submitted tying lots of things together, to prove lineage. Keep at it :)

I have been looking and looking for documentation of the birth of Horatio Gwin. I have been unable to find. If someone has knowledge of a document, I would really appreciate your help. I sent off for a copy of birth record from Pennsylvania and received a return of "No record found."

Hang on to that "no record found" letter. It will show that you did your due diligence in looking for the record, especially if you need to rely on secondary sources for your proof. I had the same thing happen on my Mayflower application. We never did find the original death certificate I needed, but the Society required the letter showing that I tried.
