Note: Weekly Argus, 17 August 1874
San Bernardino, CA
Passed from earth on the 8th day of August, 1874, Mrs Elizabeth HUNT,(Elizabeth GWINNUP) mother of J. A. KELTING. Mrs HUNT was born in Philadelphia in the 1786, being in her 89th year. She has been a resident of San Bernardino since 1883. The story of Mrs HUNT is almost without parallel in the life of a women. She descended from the stock of the first settlers of Manhatten, and has preserved many of the relics of that age up to the time of her death. She bore a prominent and active life in the period of our countrys history, and up to nearly the time of her death she would recite unwritten historical events of great interest and with a vivid recollection. She was a woman of great physical powers, strong will and retentive memory, almost without equal. It may truthfully be said that she posessed the most conversational and clear perceptions of thought and her mind a storehouse of historical events seldom found in a woman. Mrs Hunt bore an active part privateering in the war of 1812, and went from Philadelphia to New York unaccompanied to look after her interest in the matter. She travelled twice west of the Mississippi 1832-3 to the Indian Territory after the Indians were removed West under the order of General Jackson. She tavelled three times across the plains before there were any railroads, making one of her trips at the age of 75 years from Philadelphia to Sacramento. Mrs HUNT has been one of the noblest and most active of American woman, her life would be an interesting history. Faithful, true, and kind hearted in all her nature. This is the most comforting thought left to those that mourn her loss. " The Good die not". The funeral took place on Sunday from the residence of Col. J. A. KELTING and was very largely attended for for Mrs HUNT was popular. Appropriate services were conducted by Elder Whitlock.
