The Gwentian Chronicle records that in 796 Caradawc, son of Gwyn, son of Collwyn, King of Gwynedd, were killed in action at Rhuddlan. Maredydd, king of Dyved were also killed in this action. [1]
It should be noted that the Chronicle of the Princes of Wales records that "the Saxons killed Caradog king of Gwynedd" in 800[17]. [2]
There is agreement that the woman who married Gwrgan was a daughter of Gwyn. The most reliable sources assert that her name was Nest.
A daughter
Brayley et al show Gwrgan married "a daughter" of Gwyn: Gwrgan ap Ithel Ddu the father of Iestyn, is said to have married a daughter of Gwyn ap Collwyn. [3]
Morris also calls attention that "A daughter of that Collwyn (and sister of Cadifor Fawr ap Collwyn, Prince of Dyfed would occur about 1025 [4])
Nest ferch Gwyn
Boyer shows Gwrgan married second Nest ferch Gwyn ab Ednywain. [5]
Gwyn was the son of Collwyn, King of Gwynedd. [6]
Boyer, following Bartrum, shows Gwrgan as the son of Ithel, who in turn was the son of Idwallon, the son of Morgan Mawr, Morgan being the king of Morgannwg who died in 974. [5] Gwrgan's pedigree name would thus be Gwrgan ab Ithel ab Idwallon ap Morgan Mawr.
As shown by Peter Bartrum, later manuscripts all transpose these names in the Dyfed family from the correct sequence of Collwyn ap Gwyn.[7]
Wolcott notes that this daughter would fit well with Gwrgan of about 1010. [8]
Angkarat ferch Gwyn
Marlyn Lewis shows Gyrgant, Prince of Glamorgan who died in 1030 married to Angharat verch Gwyn [9]
Her husband is the father of three children, but as he was married twice, it is not certain who the mother of his children were. [5]
Therefore the discussion of Gwrgan's children is placed only on Gwrgan's profile.
Without further citation, Geni states that Angharad ferch Maredudd was the wife of Gwyn ap Collwyn of Dyfed in addition to being the wife Llywelyn ap Seisyll and Cynfyn ap Gwerystan, arglwydd of Cwybr [10]
The Geni site further asserts that Angharad as therefore the mother of Gwyn's children, Caradawg and Angharat. [10]
Angharad's detailed biography demonstrates that there was little room in her life for an additional marriage to Gwyn, and no source for such a relationship has been found other than Geni.
Therefore Angharad has been removed as a mother for Caradawg and Angharat.
