Arthur was born in 1874. His parents were Abraham Gyte and Mary Nuttall .[1] Arthur was christened at St Mary's Church, Wombwelll, Yorkshire on 4 October 1874. [2][3]
Arthur lived with his parents and siblings in George Street, Wombwell when the 1881 and 1891 census was taken.[4][5] This area of Wombwell consisted of rows of tightly packed terrace houses, mainly occupied by the families of local coal miners. The houses were demolished in the 1950s when new council houses were built in the town. The area is now a public car park.
Arthur married Lillian Coxon on 27 Dec 1897 at St Marys Church, Wombwell, Yorkshire.[6] They had seven children, all boys.
In 1901 Arthur and Lilian lived at 30 Hoyland Street, Wombwell, Yorkshire with their two oldest sons. [7]
By 1911 they had moved to 226 Hough Lane, Wombwell, Yorkshire. Five of their sons were at home on census night.[8]
Lillian passed way on 16 Nov 1921 and was buried in Wombwell Cemetery. [9] [10]
Arthur married Elizabeth Wright on 15 Oct 1928 in St Marys Church, Wombwell, Yorkshire.[11]
In 1838 Arthur was involved in a car accident that resulted in the death of two pedestrians. He was sent to prison for 6 months for dangerous driving..[12]
Lincoln Echo - Sunday 5 November 1838 - PRISON FOR "BEES IN CAR" MOTORIST - Dangerous Driving: Not Guilty of Manslaughter - For driving a car to the danger of the public at Limber on Sunday, August 21, Arthur Gyte (64), A grocer of Gloucester-street, Sheffield, was at Lincolnshire Assizes on Saturday sent to prison for six months. His driving licence was suspended permanently. The jury returned the verdict of "Not guilty" on charges alleging the man slaughter of Arthur Johnstone Taylor (29), of Limber, and his 10 year-old son, Arthur Raymond Taylor. Mr. R. E. A. Elwes prosecuted, and Mr. P. E. Sandlands K.C and Mr. Walker Carter were for Gyte. Gyte was stated to have knocked down Taylor and his son when they were walking on the footpath. His explanation for the car leaving the road was that he was troubled by bees which got into the car, and that the car ran on the path white he was beating the off.
Arthur passed away in 1960. [13] He was buried on 25 February 1960 at Wombwell Cemetery, Wombwell, Yorkshire.[10]
