Biography

Philipp I. von Habsburg (* 22. Juli 1478 in Brügge; † 25. September 1506 in Burgos) was also known as Felipe I de Castilla «el Hermoso».

In 1482 he became Archduke of Burgundy, after his mother's death. He was also King of Castile and Léon from 26 November 1504 to his death.

He married Joanna of Castile in 21 October 1496 and the couple had six children:

  • Eleanor (1498–1558), queen consort of Portugal and France
  • Charles (1500–1558), king of Spain, emperor of the Holy Roman Empire
  • Isabella (1501–1526), queen consort of Denmark, Norway and Sweden
  • Ferdinand I (1503–1564), king of Bohemia and Hungary, emperor of the Holy Roman Empire
  • Mary (1505–1558), queen consort of Hungary and Bohemia
  • Catherine (1507–1578), queen consort of Portugal
