Alfred Reginald Hacker was born on the 26th of August 1906 at the village street in Broad Hinton, Wiltshire, England. He was the second son of Alfred Benjamin (Ben) Hacker and Elizabeth Hunt.[1] He was baptised on the 30th of September at St Peter ad Vincula Church in Broad Hinton. His father Alfred was a journeyman baker by trade and an elder brother, Les, had been born in Broad Hinton three years before.[2]
Shortly after his birth the family moved to the nearby village of Hilmarton where brothers Donald, Cecil and Eric (Chip) were born. Donald was born in 1907, baptised at the Church of St Laurence in Hilmarton[3] and buried at the same church a month later.[4] Cecil and Eric were both baptised at the Church of St Peter ad Vincula in Broad Hinton, in 1909 and 1910 respectively.[2] The family were still living in Hilmarton at the time of the census in 1911.[5]
The family moved to 39 Edinburgh Street in Swindon and Alfred was admitted to Gorse Hill School on the 10th of June 1912.[6]
Four younger siblings were born over the next few years in Swindon; Dorothy, Kathleen, George, Muriel and Elsie, although George died in 1919.
He married Constance Alice Palmer (Connie) Aldridge on the 30th of March 1929 at the Trinity Presbyterian Church in Victoria Road, Swindon. The witnesses were brother Leslie and sister Kathleen. At the time of the marriage Alfred was a 22 bachelor living at 1 Whiteman Street in Swindon and was a general labourer at the railway works. Connie, daughter of Frederick Aldridge, a fitter at the railway works, was a 24 year old spinster of 93 Victoria Road who worked as a draper's assistant.[7]
Reg and Connie's children, Brian (1930-2017), Derek (1934-2000), Vina (1937-2019), Wendy (1940-2014) and Antony (1945-) were all born in Swindon over the next few years.[8]
They were living at 3 Union Row in Swindon at the time of the 1939 Register. Alfred was a general labourer.[9]
Alfred Reginald Hacker of 15 South Street Swindon, scaffolder, died on the 11th of January 1969 at St Margaret's Hospital in Stratton St Margaret, aged 62. The informant was son Brian, also of 15 South Street. [10]
