Biography

Ellen Hackney was born on 16 January 1894 at Broadbottom, Greater Manchester, the village historically in Cheshire. Her date of birth was recorded in the 1939 Register.

In the 1901 census Ellen was living with her parents Samuel and Sarah Jane Heckney [sic] at 92 Bentgate Street, Milnrow, near Rochdale, Lancashire. Allin, as her name was recorded, was aged 6. [RG13/3831 188 Pg 16]

In 1911 Ellen was boarding with two of her siblings at the home of Thomas Jones at 7 Freeman St, Oldham. Aged 17, she was a ring piecer in the cotton spinning industry.

Ellen Hackney married Harold Byrom on 10 August 1912 at St. Stephen the Martyr Church, Oldham, Lancashire. Their marriage certificate recorded Harold was a bachelor aged 23 and a spinner. His father was named as Benjamin Byrom, a cardroom hand. Ellen was a spinster aged 19 and a ring piecer. Her father was named as Samuel Hackney, a spinner. At the time of their marriage Harold was living with his family at 1 Taylor St and Ellen was living at 7 Freeman St, Oldham. Their witnesses were John Connell and Amy Byrom, Harold's sister.

This couple are believed to have had no children.

The 1939 Register, taken on 29 September 1939, has been described as a snapshot of the civilian population of England and Wales just after the outbreak of the Second World War. The Register recorded each person's address, date of birth and occupation.
At that time Harold and Ellen were residing at 11 Stirling Street, Oldham, Lancashire. Harold, aged 50, was an assistant ring overlooker. Ellen, aged 45, was a ring spinner. Her date of birth was recorded as 16 January 1894.
