Biography

Madge was born at Kirkton (in the living quarters above the family hardware store) where she started school. She later attended Motherwell school where she completed the 5th class (first year of high school). She was the first of the siblings to attend high school - 3 years at St. Marys, Ontario. She boarded with the Cameron family for $1.25. She took her own food.

She attended Stratford Normal School (teacher college) and taught at Powassan (salary $850) and Rothsay ($1000). In those years, teachers were required to return to Normal school for a second year for additional training, so she did (a waste of time, she said). She then became a teacher at a rural school west of Atwood where she had up to 44 students from grades 1 to 9. Pay was $600 the first year and $700 the next. She married Gordon Dickson in 1936 and they farmed until 1963. They built a house at the north end of the farm on a lot they retained and lived there until 1987 when they moved to Palmerston. After Gordon died in 1993, she moved to a retirement home in Listowel where she lived until her death.

Her interests included Womens' Missionary Society, Ladies Aid (Presbyterian Church in Atwood), Womens' Institute, and flower gardening.

A natural left-hander, she was required to learn how to fit into a right-handed world. She had admirable handwriting skills and was an accomplished knitter, both right-handed. She did both until her final year. She knitted countless mitts and baby clothes that were sent to overseas charities.

And she did enjoy telling others about her talented grandchildren.

I remember seeing her when I was younger. We had a birthday party for her every year at the Stone Crock restaurant where the whole family would gather to celebrate. The last one we had was her 100th birthday in 2010, the year after she died.

She was the first in her family to go to high school and graduated from St. Mary's (Ontario) high school and then trained at Normal School as it was called to become an elementary school teacher. Her postings were at Powassen, Rothsay and near Atwood. This was in the early 1930s so her salary was as low as $600 - men with similar qualifications made more money. School boards were required to pay a raise to re-hired teachers so she was not rehired from her first two placings. She met Gordon Dickson at a Halloween dance, and they were married in May 1936. She became a full-time farmer, mother, gardener, housemaker thereafter.

Hackney-441 and Hackney-439 appear to represent the same person because: I know from research the Madge Hackney with Charles and Helena as Parents, is the same one who married Gordon and was the mother of Ross and his siblings.
