1759 Birth

Elisha Hadden stated in his Military pension records that he was born on July 28, 1759 in York Co., Pennsylvania.[1]

1776-1781 - Service in the Revolutionary War

The U.S. Congress passed an act on June 7th 1832 extending pensions to veterans of militia service in the Revolutionary War. Images of the full text of Elisha Haddon's applications for such a pension are attached to this profile. The following is a summary of what information is contained in the papers.

On May 6, 1833, Elisha Haddon, who had reached the age of 73, appeared in the Coles County, Illinois circuit court to swear to his service in the war. Haddon stated that he was born in York County, Pennsylvania on July 28, 1832.

At the beginning of the war, Elisha Haddon lived in Rockbridge County, Virginia. He entered the service as a Private soldier at the age of 17 in 1776 in the volunteer militia in the Company commanded by Captain James HALL and in the Regiment commanded by Col. Andrew LEWIS. They marched to Greenbrier and across Gawley Mountain in pursuit of the Shawnee Indians, then marched back to Rockbridge County where he was discharged verbally.

In 1781, he was living on Halachuck River in Green County, North Carolina. He enlisted as a volunteer Private in the Company of Rangers commanded by Captain William PRUETT and served for 3 months guarding Green County against hostile Cherokees, then was discharged. He was later drafted into the militia in the company Commanded by Capt. James WILSON and in the Regiment commanded by Col. John SEVIER. They marched to Kings Mountain where he was in the engagement against the British and Tories. After the battle and a five-day march, he was discharged again. [2][3] [4]

1787-1788 Cherokee Wars

On August 4th,1787 or 1788, Elisha was a citizen of Washington County, North Carolina. He was again drafted and served as a Private in Captain John FANES Company. After a march to Houston Fort, near the Tennessee River, he was put under the Command of Major CRAIG. They then marched to Cittico Town on the Tennessee River, which Colonel Sevier had burned.

There he was one of only 32 men surrounded by he guessed some 450 Cherokees. Haddon said the soldiers were drawn into the river and half were killed and five were wounded. He was taken prisoner. His leg had been broken by a rifle ball, and he had been shot in his left shoulder and arm. His brother rescued him and they escaped to the fort. Captain FANE was among the slain. After seven weeks at the fort, he was carried home in a litter. He states that he was 8 weeks in the Service of the United States in this expedition from the time he entered it until he was taken home. [5][6] [7]

Around 1790, moved from North Carolina

Two years after battling the Cherokee, he moved to Kentucky. He lived there until around 1828, then moved to Indiana near Boonsville. Around 1830, he moved to Coles County Illinois.

William Ashmore, a neighbor, testified as to Elisha's service. He said he had helped to bury the dead at Cittico and took care of the wounded Elisha. [8][9] [10]

Pension not granted

Elisha Hadden's application for a pension seems to have been rejected because frontier service was not under military organization. [11][12] [13]

Marriages

These marriages have weak documentation and need more work. There is nothing on Rhoda Ashmore, who is supposed to be the mother of one of Elisha's children. Elisha Hadden married Margaret Stephenson on March 3, 1779 in Rockbridge County, Virginia.

Elisha Hedden married Mary Garris or Carriss, daughter of Simon Garris, on September 25, 1805.[14]

Elisha Haden married Mary Harrison on May 6, 1809 in Logan County, KY.

Elisha Hadden married Mary N. Trimble on December 10, 1810 in Logan County, KY.
