Biography

Bert was born in 1907 in Dundurn, Saskatchewan. His mother Darlene and brother Maurice moved there to be with her family (Petersons) from Illinois after her husband Bert Hadley died. She was widowed with a toddler and an unborn child (Bert). The family lived with Darlene's parents Andrew and Emily Peterson and her maternal grandfather Charles Magnus Skolds. After Darlene remarried, Bert continued to live with the Peterson grandparents and with Darlene's brother George Turner Peterson and his wife Luella; he also lived for a time with his mother and step-father. Bert received an inheritance from his father's estate and purchased a farm where he started his own family with Margaret. The "dirty thirties" were very bad in the area and he eventually sold the farm and moved to Dundurn where he opened a garage and did mechanical repair and sold fuel. Eventually Bert expanded the business to include sale of farm machinery and Buick cars. During "retirement" Bert worked for the municipality and a grain elevator in Dundurn. Bert achieved a life time membership in the local chapter of Masons and enjoyed curling and gardening. Together with Margaret he raised four children to adulthood and was a kind and loving grandfather to 15 grandchildren.
