Martha was born in 1824 (christened 24 July 1825). Her parents were Joseph and Phebe Hadley. She was born in Dudley, Worcester, England.

At the time of the 1841 UK census she lived at Owen Street in Tipton with Morgan and Jane Hunt and their two children Martha and Mary Ann.

In 1846 she married John Wilkinson, a coal miner. John and Martha had a daughter, Mary Ann born 1847. John died in 1848 at the age of 24.

In 1849 Martha married another miner, Andrew Bond who had also been widowed. In the 1851 UK census she and Andrew were listed as living at Horsely Heath, Tipton with a John Wilkinson (her previous husband's father) also a coal miner, and William Wilkinson and Thomas Wilkinson (her previous husband's brothers), who were both bricklayers.

Also living with them at this time were two children from Andrew's previous marriage to Ellen Barnes, and also Martha and John's daughter Mary Ann, and Martha and Andrew's first child Martha.

By 1861 Andrew and Martha had had six children: Martha, Henry, John, Andrew, Joseph, and Mary, although only John, Andrew and Mary were still alive in 1861. Both Andrew and Mary died in 1862.

In the 1861 census they were still living at Horsely Heath. Andrew (now 40) was still listed as a "miner". At this stage, Ellen and Andrew's two children Ambrose and Ellen were still with them, and also Mary Ann, John and Martha's daughter.

After 1861 they had two more children, Joseph Hadley in 1864 and Ellen in 1866 but Ellen died in 1868.

Andrew died in 1876 and Martha emigrated to NZ in 1883 with her son Joseph Hadley Bond. Her son John had emigrated to New Zealand a few years earlier.

Martha died in Dunedin, New Zealand in 1888 and is buried at Southern Cemetery in Dunedin.
