It was in 1876, that the Gottfried Haffner family boarded a ship Empress from Hamburg, Germany to New York Harbor on 10 June 1876 they landed and went on to Marion County Kansas.
In the Volga German settlements in Marion County Kansas, a good portion of this population helped to settle Oklahoma. The first Volga Germans came to Oklahoma in the spring of 1891, Okeene, Oklahoma was one of several northwest Oklahoma Communities that attracted a large number of German immigrants. Obituary: Gottfried Haffner Gottfried Haffner was born March 22,1839 in Sherbopawka, Russia, and died Friday April 25,1924, aged 75 years one month and three days. He was married , April 19,1860 to Katherina Elizabeth Winter to which union ten children were born, five of whom have preceded him to the great beyond. April 18,1924 he received a stroke of paralysis which caused his death seven days later. He leaves behind 3 sons, 2 daughters, 20 grandchildren, and 27 great grandchildren to mourn his death. Funeral services were held in the SDA Church and the remains taken to the Omega SDA cemetery for burial.
