Biography
Hermina seems to have been born in January 1871, in Germany, to John T Hafft and Wilhelmina Schultz. The evidence about her birth is not consistent. The 1880 census claims she was 8 years old, and born in Pennsylvania.[1] Her 1894 marriage application claims she was born on 5 November 1867.[2] The 1900 census claims she was born in November 1871, in Pennsylvania.[3] Her 1902 marriage application claims she was born on 5 November 1876 in Philadelphia.[4] Her death certificate claims she was born at sea.[5] But the departure and arrival passenger lists both include an infant named Wilhelmina, and as the earliest record, they seem most likely to be accurate.[6][7] Perhaps other records are distorted by a desire to present herself as a native-born citizen.
She and her parents and her brother Carl (apparently Frederick Hafft) arrived in New York City on 17 April 1871, on the Westphalia, which left Hamburg on 5 April 1871. [6] [7]
In 1880, she was living with her mother and siblings at 2813 Leamy Street. She was attending school. [1]
She had one child before her first marriage: [8]
She was married to William Leopold Joseph Westermann, on 21 October 1894, by Reverend George A Scheer, of St Mark's Evangelical Reformed Church.
She was living at 2947 Reese Street, and not working.
[2]
They had three known children:
[3]
In 1900, she was living with her husband and her three sons, at 2951 Reese Street, Philadelphia, which they were renting from her mother.
William was a weaver.
Her son William (listed as 'William Westerman') was attending school.
[3]
She married Edward B Dager, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on 22 December 1902. [10] [4] They had at least one child:
From at least 1910 until her death, she was in the State Hospital in Norristown, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania.
