Biography

Francis James Hagan (1883-1931) was born in the West Derby district in Liverpool on the 25th August 1883. He was the son of Henry Hagan and Ellen O'Donnell [1] and he was christened at All Souls Catholic church, Liverpool on the 3rd September 1883. [2]

He would have several younger sisters, including one, Mary Ann, who died in infancy and following the birth of another, Ellen in 1890, both the baby and Francis' mother were "removed" separately from the household and would not return." In 1891 Henry, his sister Georgina and his father were living in Juliet Street, Kirkdale [3] and would subsequently go and live with his uncle Peter Hagan in Toxteth Park before 1901 when Francis was employed as a stationer's assistant. [4]

The following year Francis would go to sea working as a ship steward, his first ship being the "Huascar" in 1902 [5] and although the ships he served on changed over the years, his occupation did not and he would spend almost 30 years mainly on Atlantic crossings becoming a first class waiter.

He lived in Lodgings in Liverpool from the early 1900s [6] and in 1911 was living in Madelaine Street, Toxteth Park. [7]

He was working aboard the ill-fated "Lusitania" when it was torpedoed in May 1915 by the Germans during WW1. [8] He was one of those fortunate enough to be rescued. [9]

The experience did not deter him from continuing his employment at sea although it was paused when, in 1918, he was called up to serve in the war. He served between 1918-1919 in the 1st Battalion, Liverpool (Kings) Regiment and it was during this time he was living with his sister Georgina at Ponsonby Street, Toxteth Park. [10] [11] He was absent from the 1921 census (possibly at sea) but lived with his sister until at least 1923. [12]

Latterly he was primarily working the big liners between Southampton & New York, his last recorded trip being in August 1931 aboard the "Berengaria". [13]

He died in Southampton on the 16th November 1931, his address given at the time was The Polygon, Southampton. [14] [15]

He was buried in Hollybrook Cemetery, Southampton. [16]
