Biography

Georgina (Hagan) Winters was born in Lancashire, England.

Georgina Hagan (1888-1951) was born st Stanhope Street, Toxteth Park on the 24th February 1888. She was the daughter of Henry Hagan and Ellen O'Donnell ^[1]

and she was christened on the 7th March 1888 at the nearby St Vincent's church in Liverpool. ^[2]

Sometime around 1890/early 1891 her mother & baby sister, Ellen, left the household and in 1891 Georgina, her father & elder brother were living on Juliet Street in Kirkdale ^[3] but they subsequently moved in with her uncle Peter Hagan back in Toxteth Park on Beaufort Street. ^[4]

She married a ship steward, William Winters, at St Vincent's church on the 25th September 1910 (date recorded in margin of her baptism record) ^{[5] [6]} and moved to Palace Road, Aintree, at least for a while. It was given as her address when she had to register her father's death in December 1910 but before the 1911 census she had moved to nearby Sydney Street, Aintree. She was alone in the household then ^[7] as her husband was at sea but they welcomed their first child, Helen Margaret later that year. ^[8] Helen was followed by Georgina Frances (1912), and as her family grew and her husband being away she possibly felt distanced from her only family and moved back to Toxteth Park around 1913 to Ponsonby Street. It was there that the family continued to grow with Doreen Kathleen (1914), William Henry (1916), Francis Harold (1918) ^[9] and Eileen Marie (1921) after the 1921 census.

They stayed at Ponsonby Street until around 1930 ^[10] when William left abandoning Georgina and his 6 children. (Family stories stated he went off to America and he may well have done for a while but was back in England certainly before WW2 when he was working as a night porter in Nottinghamshire and subsequently settled down with someone in Bedford)

Georgina, with 6 children and no income struggled to support them. She lived for a year on Upper Canning Street, Toxteth ^[11] but then moved into a large house (converted into flats) on Huskisson Street of which she was the caretaker for some years. ^{[12] [13] [14] [15]}

She died there on the 22nd October 1951 ^[16]

and was cremated at Liverpool Crematorium on the 26th October 1951. ^[17]
