Biography

Eleanor Haggard was born 14 June 1867 and was baptised on 27 July 1867 Burnham, Buckingham[1][2]. She was the daughter of Frederick Haggard, a Stock Broker, and Emily Anstey.

In the 1871 England Census, Eleanor Haggard (aged 3) was recorded living at Eltham Road Brownham House, Eltham, Lewisham, London & Kent with her father Fred T Haggard (48), her mother Emily C Haggard (39) and her three siblings Emily Haggard (17), Reginald A Haggard (9) and Mabel Haggard (1). Also in the household were three servants.

She was still in Eltham, Lewisham, London, England in 1881, now residing in Station Road with her family.

On 20 December 1894 and aged 27, she married 37 year old John Edward Ivor Yale (the son of William Corbet Yale-Jones-Parry) at St Jude's, South Kensington, Kensington and Chelsea, after Banns[3]. John was a Barrister at Law of 15 Earls Court Gardens; Eleanor was a spinster of 1 Broadwater Down, Tunbridge Wells. Her father Frederick was one of the Witnesses.

YALE-HAGGARD.
At St. Jude's, South Kensington, was solemnised, on the 20th ult., the marriage of John Edward Ivor Yale, eldest son of Mr Yale, of Plas-yn-Yale, Denbighshire, with Eleanor, daughter of Mr F. T. Haggard, of Broadwater Down, Tunbridge Wells. The Rev. R. F. Rumsey, vicar of Burnham, Bucks, officiated, assisted by the vicar, the Rev. Prebendary E. A. Eardley-Wilmot. The bride, who was given away by her father, wore a dress of ivory satin Duchesse trimmed with old Limerick lace and sprays of orange blossom, and carried a bouquet of lilies of the valley, gardenias, orange blossom, and white lilac; her veil was fastened with orange blossom and a diamond star, one of the numerous wedding gifts. Two little children, Miss Betty Birkbeck and Miss Ruth Haggard, attended as trainbearers, dressed in ivory Liberty velveteen, each wearing a small gold bracelet presented by the bridegroom. Capt. Lysons acted as best man. The reception was held at Bailey's Hotel, the bride and bridegroom leaving before five o'clock for Oxford. The bride's travelling dress of cloth, of a delicate shade of beaver, had a pale blue cloth waistcoat, and with it was worn a long black Thibet boa, the hat being one of the new black beavers simply trimmed to harmonise with the dress.[4]

They had one daughter: Ivor Eleanor Isabel Yale (b. 8 June 1896, d. 21 Feb 1919)

Sadly her husband John had died on 23 April 1896 in South Africa, before the birth of their daughter.

Eleanor Yale (aged 33, a widow and Living on Own Means) was recorded as a Lodger in the household of James Hawley (38) and his wife Rose Hawley (39) at Hoovelea, Windsor Road, Bournemouth, Christchurch, Hampshire & Dorset in the 1901 England Census. Also with her was her 4 year old daughter Ivor E I Yale.

In the England Census of 1911, Eleanor Yale (aged 43 and a widow) was recorded in the household of her father Frederick T Haggard (88 and of Private Means) and her mother Emily C Haggard (80) at 1, Broadwater Down, Kent, England. Also in the household was her 14 year old daughter Ivor Hale and her married sister Emily A Cornell (57 and of Private Means), along with five servants.

Her father Frederick passed away on 18 August 1914 aged 92. Two years later her mother Emily passed away 12 December 1916 at about age 86.
