Biography

Johann (John) Hahn was the eldest son of Ludwig Hahn and Fredericka Paesch.

He emigrated to New Zealand as did his younger brother Louis. They wrote home to their family and encouraged their family to join them which they did in 1875. The family arrived at Wellington and later moved to Oxford where John and Louis were reunited with the family.

In 1876 John married Emilie Niethe and spent 17 years in Oxford where they raised a family of 12 children.

On 12 February 1877 Jack was naturalised as a New Zealander. John Hahn, Birth Date: abt 1851, Age: 26 Yrs, Birth Place: Klaipeda, Lithuania, Former Nationality: Prussian, Occupation: Bushman, Residence City: Oxford, Naturalisation Date: 12 Feb 1877, File Number: 1877/655

He worked as a Bushman but kept up his interest in farming helping out on farms where he could. He was also interested in woodchopping and feats of strength. He also played the cello.

After the bush fires in 1893 John, Emilie and their family of 9 packed up their belongings and moved to Westland where work was plentiful. The journey was to take the Hahn family 3 weeks in a horse drawn wagon over little more than a rough track through Porters and Arthurs Pass. Land was bought on their arrival and cleared so farming could begin and a house built by John at Kokiri near the Otira rail line.

Three more children were born over the next few years but one daughter Ernestine died at just 14 months.

John took on full time work at the Arnold Siding Sawmill so Emilie and the 2 eldest daughters took care of the farm.

In 1900 John's family had cause for great celebration with the event of a double wedding held at his home in Kokiri. His daughter Elfriede's marriage to Henry Wilson and his son's marriage to Margaret Beveridge. It was a large group that gathered outside the house to have a photo taken to mark the occasion.

John Hahn died at Greymouth in 1919 [1] age 69 and is buried at Greymouth cemetery.[2]
