John Alicius Haig was born on 5 April 1857 in Edinburgh, Midlothian. His father, John Haig, was aged 54 and his mother, Rachel Mackerras Veitch, was aged 36 at the time of his birth.
In the 1861 Scotland Census, John A Haig (aged 3) was recorded living with his father John Haig (54), his mother Rachel M Haig (38) and his siblings William H Haig (20), Hugh V Haig (16), Janet S Haig (13), Henrietta F Haig (9) and George O Haig (1) at 24 Charlotte Square, Edinburgh. Also in the household were four servants[1].
By 1871, John Alicia Haig (aged 13) was recorded as a Pupil at Rugby, Warwickshire, England[2].
He graduated from Trinity College, Cambridge University, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, England, with a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.).
He married widow Lady Jessie Marion Waller (nee Purbrook) (the daughter of Henry James Purbrook) on 29 November 1890 at St. Mary Abbot's in Kensington, London, by Licence[3]. Notice of their marriage was printed on page 1 of the Cork Constitution dated 5 December 1890:
They remained childless.
In the 1901 England Census, John A Haig (aged 40 and a Distiller) and his wife Jessie M Haig (33) were recorded as Visitors in the household of John R B (Lord) Grantley (45) and his wife Alice (Lady) Grantley (36) at Stackley House, Great Glen, Leicestershire, England[5].
John was connected with the business of Messrs John Haig and Company, the well-known Whiskey distillers.
By 1911, John A Haig (aged 53 and a Merchant) was recorded living with his wife Jessie M Haig (50), one visitor and two servants in Ladymead, South Ascot, Sunninghill, Berkshire, England[6].
John served in the 1st World War, although he was about 57 years of age. In the transport service he did good work, and received the rank of Captain. After the war he and his wife took up residence at Lawfield, on the estate of his nephew, Colonel Oliver Haig of Ramornie.
His wife Jessie passed away in 1926.
He was made a Member of the Order of the British Empire (O.B.E.).
In about April 1933 he left the Ladybank district of Fifeshire, Scotland and went into a nursing home in Edinburgh.
Captain John Alicius Haig died on 6 July 1933 at 25 Belgrave Crescent, Edinburgh, Scotland at the age of 76. He was buried with his late wife on 10 July 1933 at Saint Fintan's Cemetery, Sutton, County Dublin, Ireland[7]. PLOT: 1907 Section, Row E, Plot 44
