Biography

David Haig was the 7th son of his father, James Haig, and as such probably did not expect to inherit the lands and title of his father. The earliest records of him are actually in Groningen, Holland where he was living with his maternal uncle, William Macdowell. Good fortune fell to him there in Holland. First, he married a wealthy widow, Hibernia Scholes, and second his uncle William Haig decided to name him as his successor to the lordship of Bemerside. His new found wealth and connections allowed him to pay off the massive debts which had burdened the Bemersyde estates.
He continued to live in Holland for some time and did not permanently take up ersidence in Bemersyde until 1646.
