James was born in 1834, the "first white child born in [Yalobusha] county." [1] He is the son of Leeman Haile and his first wife Amarillis Edwards. In 1850 James is enumerated on the federal census in Yalobusha County, Mississippi home of his father and his father's second wife.
He enlisted in Corinth, MS as a private in Company H, Mississippi 15th Infantry Regiment. He was subsequently promoted to 2nd Lieutenant. On 12 April 1865 he was captured at Salisbury NC. He was sent to a prison in Louisville and then to Camp Chase, Ohio. He swore an Oath of Allegiance at Camp Chase on 14 June 1865 when he was released. [2]
James married Hattie Bridgers. He died in 1903. [3]
