Joseph Hanes was a United Empire Loyalist. UEL Status:Proven Date: Undated
The History of the Hain family reports that Joseph was "Supposed to have lived with the Indians." And according to the Historical Annals of Berks County, John George Hain "had eight sons, Peter, Adam, George , Frederick, Heinerich, Joseph, Casper and John, one of whom (probably Joseph) went to live with the Indians. He suddenly disappeared from home, and nothing was heard of him for many years, when Indians told the family he was well cared for."
It would appear that after this, he settled in the Livingston Manor area of New York, near to where his family had lived before their move to Pennsylvania. He apparently married there and began to raise a family prior to the Revolution.
During the Revolutionary War he joined the British Military (King's Royal Rangers of New York) and fought against local militias during the War. At the close of the War he moved to the Montreal area then to Dundas County, Upper Canada, which is now in Eastern Ontario.

It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Joseph by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA.
However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line.
It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share DNA with Joseph:
