Biography

In 1279 Henrik, Landgrave of Hesse, renounced all his rights on the duchy of Brabant in favour of Jan I, witnessed by his sisters Mathilde, Countess of Artois and Saint-Pol, and Beatrix, Lady of Kortrijk, and his nephews Robert, Count of Artois, Jan of Hainaut and Henrik, Lord of Herstal.[1]

JEAN (or JAN) II D'AVESNES, Count of Hainault, Holland, and Zeeland, lord of Friesland, son and heir, born about 1247. He married about 1270 PHILIPPE (or PHILIPPINE) OF LUXEMBOURG, daughter of Henri V, Count of Luxembourg and La Roche, Marquis of Arlon, by Marguerite, daughter of Henri II, Count of Bar-Le-Duc [see BAR 7 for her ancestry]. They had five sons, Jean (or Jan), Henri (or Hendrik) [canon of Cambrai], Guillaume (or Willem) (III) [Count of Hainault, Holland, and Zeeland], Jean (or Jan) [seigneur of Beaumont], and Waleran, and five daughters, Marguerite (or Margaretha) (wife of Robert II, Count of Artois), Alice (or Alix), Isabelle (wife of Raoul de Clermont, seigneur of Nesle, Constable of France), Jeanne (or Johanna) (nun at Fontenelles), and Marie (wife of Louis I, Duke of Bourbon). .... JEAN II D'AVESNES, Count of Hainault, Holland, and Zeeland, lord of Friesland, died 11 Sept. 1304. He left a testament dated 8 Sept. 1304. His widow, Philippe, was an executrix of the will of her daughter, Isabelle de Clermont, lady of Nesle, Philippe, Countess of Hainault, etc., died 6 April 1311. Jean and his wife, Philippe, were buried in the church of the Franciscans in Valenciennes.

Children of Jean (or Jan) II d'Avesnes, by Philippe (or Philippine) of Luxembourg:

  1. Guillaume (or Willem) III, graaf van Henegouwen, Holland, and Zeeland, lord of Friesland
  2. Marguerite (or Margaretha) van Henegouwen, married Robert II, Count of Artois)
  3. Alice (or Alix) of Hainault, married Roger le Bigod, Earl of Norfolk, Marshal of England
  4. Isabelle of Hainault, married Raoul de Clermont, seigneur of Nesle, Constable of France
  5. Marie of Hainault, married Louis I, Duke of Bourbon, Count of Clemont, la Marche, and Castres
John II of Avesnes (1247 ? August 22, 1304) was the oldest son of John I of Avesnes and Adelaide of Holland.
John II was Count of Hainaut from 1280 to his death, succeeding his grandmother, Margaret II. John continued the war between the House of Dampierre and the House of Avesnes against count Guy of Flanders for imperial Flanders.
He became Count of Holland in 1299 with the death of John I, Count of Holland, through his mother Adelaide of Holland, heiress and regent of this county. His descendants maintained this personal union between the counties.
His nephew, Count Floris V, was fighting against Flanders for Zeeland. He sought help of France against Flanders. The French defeated the Flemish in 1300 and 1301. The rebels in Zeeland were defeated as well. John's brother, Guy of Avesnes, became Bishop of Utrecht. So all his main enemies were gone.
The tide changed dramatically after a Flemish uprising and the defeat of the French army at the Battle of the Golden Spurs in 1302. Flemish patriots attacked Hainaut and Zeeland supported by the dissatisfied population there. Guy of Namur defeated John's son, William, in a battle on the island of Duiveland. Bishop Guy of Utrecht was taken prisoner. Guy of Namur and Duke John II of Brabant conquered most of Utrecht, Holland, and Zeeland. Guy of Namur was finally defeated in 1304 by the fleet of Holland and France at the naval Battle of Zierikzee. John II regained most of his authority when he died in the same year.

I removed UNKNOWN-46848 (Ymzoete) as his spouse; see Cawley's "Medieval Lands" database-Jan II d'Avesnes was only married once, though he did have a mistress. I have seen the name Ymzoete on online family trees; Cawley doesn't identify his mistress by name. In the past, they were called the parents of Willem Cuser (please see his profile for information on current research surrounding his parentage. While Cuser was a (great) grandson of Jan I of Avenes and Aleydis of Holland, which of Jan's sons he descends from is not established.
