Biography

"Gottfir. or Gottfrie Hans, or Hanes, from Holland to Westchester County, N. Y., before 1710, lived at Rye, a rope-maker. His wife, Anne, was of the town of Maroaroneck. In the cemetery near Milton, N. Y., are the following described monuments. 'In memory of Godfrey Hains, who departed this life July 22, 1768, aged 93 years.' 'In memory of Anne, wife of Godfrey Hains, who departed this life Feb. 19, 1758, aged 68.' Bairds History of Rye, Godfrey Hains, Jr., went to Nova Scotia."[1]
"Godfret or Godfrey Hanse, or Hains (1), first mentioned 1717, came over from Germany about that time, and settled on the lower part of Budd's Neck. He was a rope-maker by trade, like many of his descendants, whose 'topr-walks' were numerous in that part of the town. He died July 22, 1768, aged ninety-three. (Milton Cemetery.) Godfrey, junior, was his son, and probably Joseph and Solomon."[2]

Occupation

"...A sailor, he was captured by Turks in the Mediterranean Sea and they took him as far as Jerusalem and then released him. He returned to Germany and went to sea again, this time as part of a fleet bound for South America. He was shipwrecked and rescued by a English warship. The English pressed him into the Royal Navy and then he learned he would be required to fight against his own country (England was almost constantly at war with Europe in those years). When the ship arrived at Kip's Bay, New York, he slipped into the water and swam ashore. He made contact with Mr. DeLancey (a prominent colonist) who found use for his knowledge of ship's rigging and ropemaking. Col. Caleb Heathcote backed his ropemaking business. He became very prosperous and settled in Mamoroneck in 1709."[3]

Note: A similar story about jumping off an English Warship has been published about Godfrey's son, Matthew.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Godfrey by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Godfrey:

I too accepted as fact that "Ann, wife of Godfrey Hains", was in fact Ann "Budd". But in further research, I have not found a single reputable source to confirm this. Godfrey Hains did own land in Budd's Neck, confirmed with land records. But there is no record of an "Ann Budd" other than English birth records that are apparently of a different person altogether, that nonetheless have been offered as proof of her existence. Godfrey's headstone and Ann's headstone clearly confirm the marriage; FindAGrave has her as Ann "Budd", without a source, FamilySearch, Ancestry, Heritage, and RootsWeb all seem to reference each other, without an original source. Baird does not mention her; an extensive line of research by the Hains family with original sources cited, does not mention her [1].

I am ready to disconnect the two families on WikiTree if I cannot find an authoritative source for them. Can you help me with this? Thanks!

Hains-26 and Haines-1159 appear to represent the same person because: birth dates, residence and bio info match. "Hains" is a variation of "Haines". I chose Haines as the preferred spelling, as most offspring use this spelling.

H  >  Haines  >  Godfrey Haines Sr.
