William Thomas Haines was born on 7 August 1854 in Levant, Maine. His parents were Thomas Haines and Maria (Eddy) Haines[1].
William graduated as valedictorian from the University of Maine in 1876 and afterward earned his LL.B degree at the Albany Law School. He settled in Waterville, Maine, where he opened a legal practice. He was heavily involved in local politics, serving as the county attorney of Kennebec County for five years, a member of the Maine State Senate from 1888-1892, a member of the Maine House in 1895, and attorney general of Maine from 1896-1901. He became Governor of Maine in 1912, serving a single term[2].
He married Edith Hemenway on 1 January 1883 in Waterville[3].
William passed away on 5 June 1919 in Augusta, Maine[4], and is buried in Pine Grove Cemetery in Waterville[5].
