Biography

"Obituary"

Mrs. Rebecca Emery Rebecca Haines, daughter of Nathan and Elizabeth Woolman Haines, was born in Green county, Ohio, Aug. 27, 1827, and died at her home in Hudson township, March 6, 1902, aged 74 year 6 months and 7 days.

In 1829 she moved with her parents from Ohio and settled on Pokagan Priarie. The following spring, 1830, they moved and settled near Hudson lake, where she has since resided, except a few years that she lived in Michigan. In 1847 she was united in marriage with Moses Emery. To this union was born seven children, three of which preceded her to the better land. She is to be classed with the earliest pioneers, who settled here in what was then an undeveloped wilderness, which she has seen and aided in bringing to its present usefulness.

Her parents were Quakers and she was raised in Quaker belief, which simplicity of religious belief clung to her all through life, although she united with a class of Methodists at Hudson, under the leadership of Rev. Stafford. Her main characteristic was her deep interest in the welfare of her children. During her long illness she was a patient sufferer, no complaint having ever crossed her lips, and ever ready with a word of encouragement to those near her.

She leaves to mourn her loss, two sons and two daughters, Nathan Emery and Mrs. Susie Everett, of Watertown, S. Da., John Emery and Mrs. Sadie Garoutte, of Hudson township, besides two brothers, Jesse Haines, of Hudson township and Nathan Haines of Stafford, Kas., also three grandchildren and three great grandchildren with numerous other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at the home of her son, John Emery of Hudson township, Sunday March 9th, at 2 pm conducted by Rev. A L Miller, pastor of M E church. Interment at New Carlisle Cemetery.
