Biography

Thomas was a Friend (Quaker)
English flag
Thomas (Haynes) Haines has English ancestors.

Thomas (Haynes) Haines (son of Richard) farmer, of Northampton Township, Burlington, New Jersey was baptized at St. Michael's Church, Aynhoe, Northamptonshire, England, on 22 Dec 1666.

The Haines Ancestry, and other references, give the date of birth of Thomas Haines as 1674, and show him as the fourth son of Richard and Margaret, instead of the third son. It is believed that he was born in 1666, as shown in the Parish Records of Aynhoe, as there was no record of the death of this Thomas and of the birth of another Thomas. One source of error has probably been the 1709 census of Northampton Twp. In this census Thomas is given as aged 33, and his wife Elizabeth is given as aged 46. Since they had been married for 17 years, it seems improbable that he was only 33, for his sister Mary would have been 33, and the records of Banbury MM do not show the birth of a Thomas, too, in 1676. Furthermore, he purchased his first tract of land in 1688, and the age of 14 years seems rather young for acquiring land, even though his brother William located land at the age of 17 years.

Thomas (Haynes) Haines accompanied his parents to America, and was nearly 16 years of age upon his arrival in 1682. He became the owner of much valuable property. In 1688, he purchased 100 acres of land from Samuel Jennings; in 1688/9 he located 100 acres of land next to his brother John; in 1693, he purchased 85 acres of land from Samuel Jennings; in 1694, he purchased 200 acres of land from Henry Burr; in 1697/8, he purchased one-thirty-second of a share (about 300 acres of land) from Christopher Wetherill; in 1697, he purchased 300 acres of land from Thomas Brian; in 1703, he purchased 100 acres of land from the Indians; in 1703, he purchased 100 acres of land from William Stevenson; in 1720, he purchased 600 acres of land in Hunterdon Co., N.J., from Samuel Furness, and in the same year, he purchased 625 acres of land in Hunterdon Co. from Benjamin Furness.

At the men's Burlington Monthly Meeting held at Thomas Gardener's house on 5th day, 4 month, 1692 (Old Style Date), Thomas Haines and Elizabeth Austin declared their second intentions of marriage and the meeting inquired into the clearness to marriage, nothing was found to obstruct their marriage, they were left at liberty to proceed with their marriage.[1]

He died in Northampton, Burlington, New Jersey. His will was dated Jan. 17, 1748, and was probated Aug. 30, 1753. An inventory of his personal property, taken Sept. 1, 1753, by Samuel Woolston and James Wills, amounted to 340:8:10 English pounds.

Thomas was the brother-in-law of Francis Austin.[2]

I get sent "smart matches" from my geni tree. Some even match. They offer: From Myheritage.com, Sandra Olmstead (contact) is the following information: Middle initial for Thomas of H. Middle initial S for wife Margaret, and maiden name of Leeds (the Burcham name is also included). Additional sibs for Thomas listed are Abraham, Ann (Haines) Barton, and Margaret (Haines) Bellinger. Additional wide of Dorothy, as well as Elizabeth Austin. Additional child Mary.

I lack access to myheritage so cannot see if these are reasonably sourced, but thought I'd toss them out in case anyone wanted to pursue.

This information is absolutely wrong. Some ambitious researcher in the past has assumed that Margaret Leeds was Richard's wife and put her name in the records. In my thirty years of researching Richard Haines in England, I found NO marriage record. There were no marriages recorded at Newbottle Parish where Richard's daughter, Anna, and son John was born in 1661 and 1663. There were, however, several pages of the Aynhoe church records which were faded and impossible to read, pages which MIGHT HAVE held Richard's marriage. But there is absolutely NO EVIDENCE that it was Margaret Leeds. See my book, WHO WAS RICHARD HAINES..... by Donna Haines Daly, available on Amazon. Margaret's marriage to Burcham is apparently correct.

Haynes-3859 and Haines-3433 appear to represent the same person because: They have the same parents, and both married Elizabeth Austin.

Haines-1040 and Haines-2984 appear to represent the same person because: duplicates after merge of fathers
