Biography

Lydia was a Friend (Quaker)

Lydia was born in Ohio in 1816. She was the daughter of Levi Haines and Sarah Hatcher. Lydia’s family lived in Elkrun Township, Columbiana County, Ohio until 1830 when they moved to New Baltimore, Marlboro Township, Stark County, Ohio. They were granted a certificate (of transfer) to Marlboro Monthly Meeting, Stark County, Ohio on 4 mo., 18, 1829.

Lydia married twice, and she bore twelve children, six to each of her spouses.

Lydia married John Hamlin, the son of John and Elizabeth Hamlin, in Stark County, Ohio on 5 June 1833. John died in 1847. Their children were:

  • Sarah Haines Hamlin (1834-1907), m. John Milton Antrim;
  • Almira Hamlin (1836-1921), m. Stephen Wheeler Hiatt;
  • Levi Hamlin (1838-1917), m. Elizabeth Coppock;
  • Mary Ann Hamlin (1841-1906), m. Benjamin Franklin Newcomer;
  • Hannah Hamlin (1841-1915), m. 1st Samuel Newcomer, m. 2nd Lewis Harkness; and
  • John Hamlin (1844-1922), m. Sarah Jane Cook.

After the death of John Hamlin, Lydia married Azariah Denney. Their children were:

  • Rebecca S Denney (1849-1885), m. David E Hubbell;
  • Amanda J Denney (1851-1930), m. James Spencer;
  • Viola Denney (1853-1862);
  • Azariah Newton Denney (1855-1861);
  • Lydia Emeline Denney (1857-1937), m. Stephen Peele; and
  • Juliett “Etta” Denney (1859-1918), m. Robert McDorman.

Lydia died in Hesper, Winneshiek County, Iowa on 24 October 1864.
