Biography

Joseph was a Friend (Quaker)

From Richard Haines and his Descendants, by John W. Haines:

"Joseph Haines (son of Richard) farmer of West Nottingham, Nottingham Twp., Chester Co., Pa., but which since 1767 has been Cecil Co., Maryland. He was born at sea in 1682, aboard the Amity, while his parents were enroute to America, and shortly after the death of his father, who died during the same voyage. Joseph Haines d. 9 mo. (Nov.) 12, 1763; m. 1st, about 1704, Dorothy __________ (poss. Leeds), d. 1 mo. (Mar.) 7, 1719/20, aged 39 years. Her maiden name is not certain. It has been suggested that she was Dorothy Leeds, b. 1680, dau. of William and Mary Leeds. If so, it seems that she, or at least her children, would have been mentioned in the wills of her brothers, Thomas and William Leeds [but she was not]. It has also been suggested that her grandson, Warwick Miller, was named after the Earl of Warwick, who was claimed as a relative of the Leeds family.
Joseph Haines was in Nottingham Twp., Burlington Co., N.J. in 1707, when he purchased 200 acres of land. He and his wife were granted a certificate of removal by Burlington MM, N.J., 2 mo. (Apr.) 5, 1714, so probably they went to West Nottingham about that time. He took an active interest in the affairs of the community in which he lived and at one time was a justice of the peace. Late in life, he purchased considerable land in the Pipe Creek section of Frederick Co., now Carroll Co., Maryland, and two of his sons removed to that locality. In 1750, he purchased Wolf Harbor, a tract of 100 acres of land; The Addition to Cornwell, 50 acres of land, and Cornwell resurveyed, 250 acres of land. In 1751, he purchased Pleasant Grove, 52 acres of land. His will was dated 10 mo. (Dec.) 27, 1762, and was probated Oct. 7, 1763.
Joseph Haines m. 2d, Nottingham Mtg., under the care of New Garden MM, Pa., 1 mo. (March) 1, 1721/22, ELIZABETH THOMAS, b. abt. 1696 or 1697; d. 11 mo. (Jan.) 24, 1796, aged about 100 years; daughter of James Thomas of Whiteland, Chester Co., Pa. Her will was dated Oct. 30, 1793, and was probated March 9, 1797."

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Joseph by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Joseph:
