Biography

Charles Haines Sr. was a centenarian, living to age 105.

Charles Henry Haines, Sr. was born in 1877 in Grinnell, Iowa. He was the son of Robert Miller Haines and Joanna Hannah (Harris) Haines. He was the 5th of 6 living children.

Charles was a Phi Beta Kappa graduate from Grinnell College, majoring in Philosophy. He obtained his law degree from Harvard in 1904. After graduating from Harvard, he moved to Denver, Colorado, the home of his childhood friend, Nanaruth Taggart. (The two had been friends from the age of 4 until she left Iowa at about 11 years old.) Charles and Nanaruth married on April 15, 1906. They raised 4 children.

Charles founded a successful private law practice, specializing in water rights, mining law and property law. He also taught at Westminister, the University of Denver's night law school.

Charles served as Denver City Attorney for many years. As City Attorney, he was instrumental in breaking up the Denver KKK and routing their hold over city politicians.

Charles loved poetry and had a large repertoire of memorized poems, including long epics such as "Elegy Written In A Country Churchyard" by Thomas Gray. His children and, later, his grandchildren delighted in listening to his resonate orations.

Note: The index of the Census record does not include the priest, but a look at the actual document shows that the Anglican priest (probably pastor at the nearby St. Mary's) was a member of the household. Gustav A Lehman is listed as a lodger, but my understanding was that no money changed hands. The story was that the priest was looking for temporary housing for a few weeks (maybe until the rectory was available?), and then stayed for a number of years (I remember 7 years, but that may not be accurate):
