Biography

New Garden Monthly Meeting, located in Columbiana County, Ohio, was established by Salem Quarterly Meeting 10th Mo. 13, 1808. Joseph W Haines was born under the care of that meeting on 10 Nov 1830 to Chalkley Haines and his wife, Sarah Evans Morgan Haines. Joseph had eleven siblings, namely: Robert M. Haines, Esther W. Haines Allman, Ruth Haines, Eliza Ann Haines, Lydia M. Haines, Mary T. Haines, Maria P. Haines, Benjamin L. Haines, Eli J. Haines, Matilda T. Haines, Thomas Chalkley Haines, and James Oliver Haines.

15 Oct 1855 Ruth Esther Lupton, born 14 Aug 1837 under the care of Sugar River Monthly Meeting in Montgomery County, Indiana. Along with her parents, David W. and Ann (Miller) Lupton, and siblings, Emma, Richard, and Oliver, she was granted a certificate of removal to Western Plain MM, Iowa.

Ruth Esther Lupton and Joseph W. Haines, her future husband, are listed as members of Honey Creek MM, Hardin County, IA, and residents of Rocksylvania, Iowa in 1857, date of the earliest record book of said meeting. On 21 Oct, 1858 the first meeting of Rocksylvania MM was held. Among the charter members were listed Joseph Wright Haines, Ass’t Clerk, and Ruth E. Haines, along with her father, David W. Lupton. Their daughter, Anna Mary, was born in May, 1858, so Joseph and Ruth Esther probably married sometime in 1857. [1]

In May, 1871, Joseph brought the family to San Francisco by train, and then to Portland, Oregon on the Steamboat, AJAX. There were 26 in the party; probably Sarah, Joseph and Ruth Esther and their four children, brothers, Benjamin L., Eli J., and Thomas C., their wives and children and James O., Joseph’s youngest brother. [2]

Joseph died 12 November 1878.

10 Oct 1882 Ruth Esther Haines purchased 153 acres on Chehalem Mt.(near Newburg, Oregon) from the original homesteaders.

15 Dec 1892 Ruth E. Haines took out a mortgage in the amount of $1100 with the Scotch Loan Co. [3]

11 Oct 1893 Ruth E. Haines, age 55, m. William Moore, age 66. [4]

3 October1895 Ruth E. Haines sold 148 acres to her children, Alvin, Anna, Edward, and Oliver, for $1.00. [5]

Ruth E. went to Okanogan County Washington in about 1905 with her daughter, Anna Mary, who took up a homestead in the Aeneus Valley near her brothers Alvin and Oliver. [6]

9 May 1916 Ruth Esther (Lupton) Haines Moore died in the Aeneus Valley, Okanogan County, Washington, buried at Anglin Cemetery.
