Biography

Stephen Hair was born in the Colony of New South Wales (1788-1900)

Stephen Bourke Hair was born on 2 August 1853 and was baptised on 23 October 1853 at St. James, Sydney, New South Wales^[1]. He was the son of John Cooper Hair and Margaret Bourke.

He emigrated from Australia to New Zealand, where he married Helen Hogg Bower in 1877. Their children included:

1. Amy Ellen Hair (b. 13 Aug 1878, d. 10 Feb 1952^[2])
2. Agnes Jane Hair (b. 1880, m. Percy Haddock, d. 1949^[3])
3. Isabella Margaret Hair (b. 22 Oct 1882, m. 1905 Malcolm McLeod May Phillips, d. 21 Jul 1935 ^[4])
4. Zaida Millicent Hair (b. 1884, m. Harold Roberts Tullock, d. 1 Oct 1918^[5])
5. David Allan Hair (b. 1886, d. 1904^[6])
6. Phedora May Hair (b. 1888, m. 1912 David Reid Strang, d. 28 Jun 1956^[7])
7. Gladys Helenor Hair (b. 1890, m. 1921 John Dryden, d. 23 Jul 1963^[8])
8. John Leonard Hair (b. 1893, d. 24 Sep 1962^[9]

His Last Will and Testament was dated 18 February 1888^[10]. At the time he was residing in Matawhero in the County of Cook, in the Colony of New Zealand. His wife Helen was the primary beneficiary, as well as one of the Executors.

Stephen Bourke Hair died on 12 March 1894 and was buried on 13 March 1894 at Makaraka Cemetery, Gisborne, Gisborne District, New Zealand^[11]. PLOT: 330, Block MKG

A brief account of his death was printed on page 1 of the New Zealand Herald, Volume XXXI, Issue 9466, dated 23 March 1894:

ACCIDENTS. ETC.

Mr. Stephen B. Hair, Gisborne, whilst riding home, had a fit, and was thrown from his horse, sustaining concussion of the brain. He died on March 12.^[12]
