On 21 Dec 1826, in Patrick, Virginia, he married Elizabeth Perkins Hairston (Daughter of Harden Hairston and Sarah Stovall Staples). They settled in Franklin and had the following children.

John Henry Hairston b. 1839 - d. 1862 (of disease during civil war)
Robert Peter Hairston b. 1841 VA - d. 1906, m. Margaret Sommer Potts (sister of Anna)
Joab Early "Joseph" Hairston b. 1844 VA - d. 1872 MS, age 26/27, unmarried
George Hairston b. 1845 VA - d. 1905 MS, m. Anna Caroline Potts (sister of Margaret)
Fleming Saunders "Bud" Hairston b. 1849 MS - d. 1882 MS, m. Jane Ella Evans
Both sons Samuel and John served during the Civil War. Samuel in the 11th Regiment of the Mississippi Infantry and John in the Jeff Davis Legion, Cavalry. Samuel was discharged due to disability and died shortly after. John died of disease on 25 Jun 1862.
In the mid 1840's he relocated his family to Lowndes County, Mississippi. He died here on 8 Jul 1850. He is buried at the Hairston Family Cemetery in Lowndes.
