When Thomas married Agnes, he was working as a house joiner. He remained in this type of employment until at least 1875. As the depression started to deepen the family left Glasgow and moved to Birkenhead, Chester. In Birkenhead he gained employment as a carpenter at one of the local shipyards.
This appears to have been a rather unsettled period for the family as they then moved to Leith, then Liverpool and then Glasgow until finally settling in the Newcastle upon Tyne/Gateshead area.
Thomas was a very strict Baptist and wouldn't allow any of his children learn to play cards. Every Sunday the family would gather for a religious service that was held at their house. Everyone would sing hymns and pray.
Thomas and Agnes had about eight children. They were John, Thomas, James, Agnes, Alexander, Mary Ann, Janet and Catherine. Sadly, Catherine passed away while she was still an infant.
