Origins

The identification of the family of the Hartford, Connecticut Hales is identified from two promising sources:

1. In Winthrop's Medical Journal (page 713)^[1], he identifies a set of siblings in the following entry:
   
   "Mar: 23: 1666 (1667) Peck, Martha: 45 [b 1622]: wife of Paule of Hartford.... she is sister of Sam: Hale of Wethersfeild [sic] & hath a brother Th: Hale of Charlton" (Charlestown, MA). This same Thomas later removed to Norwalk, CT, having formerly had his brother Samuel with him when at Hartford; Thomas had been before that briefly at Roxbury, Mass. by 1634].

1. There were two separate Hale families found in the parish and probate records of Watton at Stone, Hertford, England, with additional evidence that they were somehow related to each other. Both are likely to be parents of two different Thomas Hales who ended up in New England:
   1. Thomas Hale married 19 Oct 1601 and made a will date 11 Oct 1630, which was witnessed by a John Hale (next), who signed by mark [Register 35:370]. Likely he who married Joan P...
   2. John Hale, signed by mark 1630 will of Thomas above. Likely he who married Martha and had the siblings documented by Winthrop, above:
      1. Thomas Hale b abt 1611 of Roxbury, Hartford, Charlestown, Norwalk; m.
      2. Samuel Hale b abt 1615 of Wethersfield
      3. Martha Hale b abt 1622 m. Paul Peck; of Hartford
