Biography

John Robert Churchill was born in 1911. He was baptised on 7 Jun 1911 at Christ Church, Lancaster Gate, Westminster, England.[1]

He was educated at Malvern School. He worked at University Motors in London.

On 20 Jun 1936 he married Dulcie Elizabeth Henriques at Holy Trinity, Brompton, London.[2]

He served in the War of 1939-45. On 7 Sep 1940 he received a Regular Army Emergency Commission, as a Second Lieutenant in the Royal Artillery. On 7 Mar 1942 he was promoted to Lieutenant (War Substantive). On 18 Aug 1944 he was promoted to Temporary Captain.[3] We know that he spent most of his War service in Kenya.

He was Master of the Worshipful Company of Grocers in the City of London in 1959. He was a Director of D Q Henriques & Co until they were taken over in 1962. District Councillor of Chailey Rural District Council. He was a JP. He served on Plumpton Parish Council for 37 years, the last seven of which as Chairman. He was a very good cricketer, who played for the Sussex Martlets in the late 1940s and early 5Os. He was a keen golfer (Captain of Piltdown Golf Club).

In Mar 1968 he married, secondly, Valerie Tamplin ( who was born Valerie Hudson on 9 Oct 1922)

He died in 1983.
