William's father, William Hale (Snr), was born at Lark Hall Lane, Clapham, near London, a descendant of many generations of nurserymen.
William Hale (Snr) arrived at Nelson on the BERNICIA on 5 November 1848 with his wife Eliza (née Mills) and their first three children—William (Jnr) born 1843, Emily 1845 and Eliza 1847.
The Sowman and Hale families are connected through three marriages:
Hale. They married Sarah Ann Sowman and William Sowman (Jnr), espectively.
William Hale (Jnr) established himself in Nelson as a retailer of seeds and plants, which complemented his father’s Tory Street nursery business. Both sides of the business continued to flourish until 1882, when William Hale (Snr) died suddenly on 24 March at the age of 60. Both businesses continued until 1894 when William Hale (Jnr) died. They were then wound up and the properties sold.[1]
