Biography

Harrison Hale married 19 year old Cynthia on October 29th, 1860 in Polk, Oregon. Together they had eight children. Franklin, William, Octavia, Leatha, Dora, Effie, Alfred and Jennie.[1]

Harrison Hale died on July 6th, 1878. He was a volunteer serving in the Company of Captain J.L. Sperry during a Indian War with the Snake, Bannock and Paiute Indians in Umatilla County, Oregon. Outside of Pendleton, near Camas Prairie, at a place called Willow Springs a "sharp fight was maintained all the afternoon," in which one man was killed and nine men were wounded. Under long range fire from the Indian Tribes the Volunteer Company decided to retreat under the cover of the night. When they were only a few hundred yards away from camp the group was fired upon and most of the men fell to the ground to avoid the shots but "Harrison Hale was too slow, and was shot dead." The rest of the group was attacked four more times during their six mile retreat, but no other men were killed.[2]

His older brother Elias was married to Elizabeth McKinnley in 1851. Elias passed away in 1854 or 54 and Elizabeth married AJ Doak in 1856.

So in 1860 when Cynthia married Harrison Hale she was marrying her step uncle. Though they were born in 1840/1 so they were about the same age and Cynthia had already been married and had two kids.

Looks like Harrison's brother Michael Hale was married to a Jemima McKinley 1821-1852 who was probably related to their other brother Elias Hale's wife Elizabeth McKinley who married AJ Doak after Elias died.
