Biography

Joseph moved to Brunswick and settled on a "fifty Acre lot" which was conveyed to proprietors 5 Aug. 1768 near the old yellow Baptist meeting house which was built by him. He signed a remonstrance with other fathers of the town protesting against unequal taxation for supporting the ministry and for other town charges, 4 May 1768. Joseph was listed in the 1771 tax list for Topsham as having one house with one adjoining building worth £6, 2 oxen, 1 cow, 1 pig, 1 acre of farm land which produced 9 bushels of grain per year. [1]

There was another Joseph Haley living in Topsham at the same time who was married to Esther Towne of Kennebunk. He was a clothier and was often referred to as “Fuller Haley”.

Joseph, and several of his family members (including “Fuller Haley”) are listed in the 1798 tax for Topsham. Joseph had a house on a two acre lot in Topsham worth $260 as well as 148 acres worth $642. He also owned two acres of marsh, worth $40, in Brunswick where he was listed as being a “non resident”. [2]

On 27 May 1800 Mary Haley was appointed administratrix for Joseph's estate with his son Joshua being responsible for posting a notice in the local paper.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Joseph by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Joseph:

Haley-2023 and Haley-944 appear to represent the same person because: The whole line of Haley-2028 married to West-9151 appears to be a duplicate of the Haley-270 line for several generations. I am proposing mergers of the entire line.
